In the big market of Cotonou, Benin economic capital city, you can see everything you can you o make voodoo, dead animal, leaves, and some voodoo. Voodoo is population in Benin and recognize like national religion, every 10th of January it is celebrate and the principal place is Ouidah, many important events take also place in Grand Popo, Abomey, Abomey Calavi, Porto Novo and every where in Benin

Guèlèdè dance in Benin

Before the Guèlèdè starts dancing, they sing for the night and ask the night to be soft with them. We said before that the important Guèlèdè celebration is in night. After the song they go to the place they stay to dance. In the place a hut is built. All the dancers must stay there and wait for the moment. The drummers stay in the middle of the place and start playing in the same moment the younger member dancing around them. The Guèlèdè dance is public and everyone can see it.

For the dance the first Guèlèdè to come is Ogbagba. It is suppose to represent of Eshou Elègba. Eshou is the messenger of the other gods and the people in Guèlèdè society must ask its benediction before the dance starts. Ogbagba comes two times first like a young dancer and second like old dancer. The next mask to come is Agbena, it comes with fire pot on its head. All those scene is to prepare the place to the mask “Iya” means Mother and nobody is allowed to see its, all the light must be off, it is the only secret mask in Guèlèdè society it represent Iyalashè.

Guèlèdè is from the Yoruba people but only known in Ketou, from Ketou it reaches Porto Novo, Ouidah, Abomey and more places. But the masks don’t look the same. Ketou has a different mask than Porto Novo or other places.
